Will Arndt, former Newtown High School quarterback, went on to have a record-setting career at Western Connecticut State University and continues his career at the professional level — playing for Ottawa in the Canadian Football League. Arndt was back in town this winter, and along with teammate and former Detroit Lions player Noel Thomas, he hosted the Football Passing Academy at NYA Sports & Fitness.
Newtown High School’s wrestling team, led by Joe Zeller’s run the title in the heavyweight division, tied East Hartford for 12th in the Class LL state wrestling championships, at Trumbull High, on February 16.

For Newtown High School, the biggest point scored in the February 9 South-West Conference wrestling championships was actually one that went against the Nighthawks — by design. Heavyweight grappler Joe Zeller, in command of his pinnacle bout with a 7-0 advantage in the third period, allowed his opponent to escape for one point. That gave Zeller a waning-seconds opportunity for a two-point takedown and, thus, an eight-point differential, good for a major decision triumph.
Newtown High School’s gymnastics team had two of the top three all around competitors, led by South-West Conference championship MVP Hannah Jojo, and the Nighthawks edged Oxford for the title, at neutral site New Milford High, on February 7.
